Lemons into Lemonade

October 23, 2017

On our last day in Palm Springs we decided to try the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. I’d heard that it rotated and provided a great unspoiled view of the valley. It ascends to 5,783 feet and brings you to the cool air in the San Jacinto Mountains. It was ninety degrees at the base and forty degrees cooler at the top, but we’d been warned and brought jackets. As I mentioned, the trams rotates, but only the floor so it can be rather disorienting. Mrs. Chatterbox felt a bit unsteady by the time we arrived at the top of the mountain, but on the way down I suggested she stand in the middle of the tram because it rotated less. She was fine when we reached the bottom.

That afternoon we packed and headed to the airport, only to discover that our flight, originating in San Francisco, had been delayed due to visibility issues from fires in the San Francisco area. Our flight would have taken us to Seattle with a connection bringing us to Portland. Now we couldn’t make our connecting flight.

At first we were disappointed, but it turned out to be a bonus. Alaska Airlines put us up in a nice hotel and re-ticketed us for a direct flight home the next day, so we got to spend more time and another night in Palm Springs. The new hotel wasn’t as nice as The Willows, but the price was muuuuch better—free!

A few hours earlier I’d learned there was to be a street fair that evening in downtown Palm Springs and I was disappointed to miss it, but a shuttle from our new hotel took us directly to the fair and picked us up a few hours later. It was like getting lemons and turning them into lemonade.

This street vendor had a paintable face and gave me permission to take his picture.

I’m always interested in watching other artists work. This fellow did amazing things with cans of spray paint.

Yesterday was Mrs. Chatterbox's birthday. Happy Birthday to my soulmate!

That tram reminds me of one from Albquerque to Sandia Crest to the west. I could have taken it but you can drive up to the top of the mountain so I just did that. Nice that you got a bonus day from the airline and now you have a new portrait to paint.

oh my I would have been disconcerted too on that tram- I am so fearful of heights. That was a lovely and lucky way to have an extra day on your vacation- and have a great week now that you are home! Cheers!

Happy Birthday to Mrs Chatterbox! I often hope that my flight back to the UK will be cancelled so I can spend an extra day wherever we are but instead it's always been delayed we are just stuck in an airport for hours. You did well!

If i had to end up missing a flight like that, i'd certainly enjoy an extra day that turned out to be so special. Many, many happy returns of the day to Mrs. Chatterbox!

You are the kind of person who always makes lemonade. You deserve free nights!

Happy Birthday Mrs. Chatterbox, I am so happy that you had a good time in Palm Springs, we are only about thirty miles from there so if you are ever back in this area give us a yell :) We have never been on the tram nor to the street fair, but would really like to do both some day. With your connecting flight delayed it is good that the airlines put you up in a hotel for the night, you got to see some things you would have missed otherwise, and it all turned out nicely.

Happy Birthday to Mrs. C! And what luck to get an extra day at no charge and see a few more of the sights. Delays aren't always a bad thing!

Happy Birthday to Mrs. C! You are both quite brave to take that tram. Such beautiful views! I'm glad you took the ride to let me see them. Your airline took great care of you! Unfortunately, The Pony did not have a positive experience flying out of San Francisco to Houston today. Pretty sure he didn't fly Alaska Airlines, though.

Those are the kind of problems we all like. I'm happy it happened to you. Happy birthday to Mrs. Chatterbox. Now that she's retired, have you begun to plan your next adventure?
