Think About It

June 14, 2013

Need to make a quick buck? This has always worked for me; I bet someone they can’t properly assume the position of Rodin’s sculpture The Thinker, one of the most famous statues ever created. Think this is a no-brainer? Give it a try, and then check the photograph below.

Did you get it right? Nine out of ten people place their left elbow on their left knee, or their right elbow on their right knee. If you placed your elbow on the opposite knee, congratulations!

Pretty darn uncomfortable, especially if you’re chubby.

Ha! I was too busy trying to figure out why he was eating his hand to figure how which knee to put my elbow on :)

Wonder what he was thinking about? "Gee, this is an uncomfortable position." or "Gee, I wonder where I left my clothes?" ;) S

Okay, i'll have to try this with my know-it-all Brother-In-Law, The Mouth. Except that he has no money to bet... Enjoy your Friday!

Good one!

I got it right because I've been there and remembered.

It's not uncomfortable if you're a statue!!
By: fishducky on June 14, 2013
I used the correct hand, but missed that I was supposed to be in an uncomfortable position...besides lacking clothes! Have a great weekend!

It does look like he's eating his hand. I didn't try it as it looks too uncomfortable. Have a terrific day and weekend. :)

I'm actually going to try this on a friend!

laughing at your observation!

I knew! My self-esteem is rising to dangerous levels. Love, Janie

I didn't get it right, but I enjoyed the post!

Plus, you gotta be naked. Try doing that next to a petting zoo.
By: Al Penwasser on June 14, 2013
That does look uncomfortable, though not as uncomfortable as most positions female superheroes are posed in.

I admit that I didn't try it, because Val is a commodity best left clothed. However, I would not have gotten the opposite leg thing.
By: Val on June 14, 2013
How clever of you to notice that.
By: Michael Offutt on June 14, 2013
I never noticed the elbow on the alternating leg before. You have a eye for detail, for sure.

I wouldn't have known, either. Then I thought about trying the position - but I don't want to take my clothes off. My husband would get the wrong idea... ;-)

I've never noticed before but of course your right!

funny challenge. i have a friend who has a toilet brush stand modeled after this sculpture. i laugh every time i visit her and see it.

Nope, I failed. Right elbow on right knee. Damn. And I watched so many episodes of Dobie Gillis when I was a kid! (If you don't get that, well, I can't say I'm surprised. It's pretty obscure. Dobie was shown posing like The Thinker, in front of a copy of the statue, on almost every show.)

A contortionist as well as a thinker. I hadn't noticed this before.
By: Bryan Jones on June 15, 2013
wonder what he was thinking about - possibly "gee my elbow is painful against my knee, maybe i should move..."
By: don\'t feed the pixies on June 15, 2013
I got the Discus Thrower in my head and really mixed things up!
By: Mitchell is Moving on June 15, 2013
Clever. Bet I can pull that on Rob .. oh ... three or four times at least.
By: Kelly Allen on June 15, 2013
I never realised he was sucking his hand either. Yep that isn't the most comfortable pose ever!
By: LL COOL JOE on June 15, 2013
you're the best.....who woulda thunk it. I never even gave the pose a second thought but you're right.....it ain't for chubby. Oma Linda
By: Oma Linda on June 16, 2013
Oh yeah.. I would have lost that bet for sure.
By: Hilary on June 18, 2013
Definitely something to think about.
