I’m a creature of habit, and once I find a product I like I’m intensely loyal. I’m also usually out of the mainstream and whatever I like isn’t popular. When Mrs. Chatterbox and I shop for furniture I always make a dash to the clearance room, where something often catches my eye.

Over the years, many of my favorite food items have vanished. I understand that nothing lasts forever but it seems this happens to me far too frequently. My favorite childhood candy, Caravel Bar, has long since been discontinued, along with my beloved Roman Raspberry wine which I once purchased by the case and enjoyed nightly. Right before Christmas my favorite hazelnut coffee creamer was discontinued.

Today I’m suffering an even greater loss. I’m addicted to Splash, a flavored water sold by Nestle. They’d been marketing several flavors and most of them I didn’t like, but I loved wild berry. After dinner while watching TV, I’d enjoy an eight-ounce calorie free bottle. It was so good I thought of it as dessert. This product helped me lose a hundred pounds. Now—you guessed it—Nestle has discontinued Splash.

I should have known something bad was coming my way when our closest grocery store stopped carrying it, and only Safeway, on the far side of town, continued carrying it. On New Year’s Eve I popped in to buy a few six-packs to discover a different product on the shelf where my Splash was supposed to be. I figured they’d gotten tired of stocking something that didn’t sell well and had removed it from the shelf, but the store manager informed me that my beloved Splash had been discontinued by Nestle.

I was grousing about this to our son CJ, who got me hooked on Splash in the first place,

and he just rolled his eyes and called my plight a “first world problem.”

I know it really isn’t important and I’ll find something else to enjoy, but I’m beginning to feel persecuted by the retail gods.

My Last Bottle. Sigh….

I took pity on you and just did a quick check at Amazon. They still have a few there! But you'd better hurry and place your order... they won't last long!

Never had a Caravel Bar. Never had Roman Raspberry wine (and I think I'm grateful). Don't miss hazelnut coffee creamer. And could never tolerate flavored waters. However, I DO miss Royal Copenhagen Musk.

Have you ever tried Mio? I use Mio to flavor my water at home and I love it. You just squirt some in and serve with ice and water. It has lovely flavors and is very delicious.

I have lost a number of favorite brands, but I think that is just part of aging. I do not like Nestle as their environmental responsibility leaves something to be desired. I also do not drink artificially sweetened drinks as my doctor has advised they play havoc with renal glands and I just read an article that artificial sweeteners have been linked to types of senility. There...have I made you feel better about your loss?

I'm sure there have been a few, but nothing comes to mind. Some favorites I can understand why they have gone they still make Blackjack Gum? I do remember when they took away the classic coke and a storm of protest brought it back (or was that a scam they did on purpose) maybe you could start a splash on line to bring back Splash.

Grocery stores used to have these lightly seasoned potato wedges that were really good but then stopped carrying them. Though now Walmart has something similar, just when I started cutting seasoned food out. Banquet used to make these "cheese nuggets" that were like smaller cheesesticks that you could microwave. They were so good, though if you cooked them too long they'd stick to the paper towel on the plate. What bugs me is when they stop making something like VCRs and there's really no good replacement with the same features. I saw something called Hint water online that's lightly flavored. I think they might sell it at Whole Foods or something so maybe you could try that or get a sample online or something.

Oh and a somewhat funny story that's related to this subject: about 4 years ago I was taking over-the-counter Prevacid for acid reflux. One day I saw none of the stores near me had it in stock. So in a panic I started going north and ended up in Grand Blanc, which is a smaller city just south of Flint. They still had Prevacid in stock at most of the stores, so I bought out pretty much the entire town's supply of it. And then a few weeks later stores near me began stocking generic Prevacid for cheaper. But at least I had enough to last about 2 years.

I remember Splash. I tend to buy the flavors and add my own but I enjoyed those. We don't drink regular milk, so we drink light almond or soy milk. Light is low fat. Now the trend is unsweetened, which is low sugar but full fat. I don't want that - I want low fat not low sugar.

Sigh. Bad subject. Tabor covered it for me. Plastic bottles do not cross the threshold. Nor do artificial flavors. They tend to be petroleum distillates, too. Don't know what to say. I can still buy orange cremesicles, if I encounter them by chance, and that works for me.

Well...this opens up a can of worms for me....( do not think they are canning worms yet ) I do not support the manufacturing nor use of bottled water in the United States. Since when did we need to stop turning on our water taps and instead go to the store and buy plastic bottles of water. Lord knows if the plastic bottle is actually safe to drink out of- plus it costs more per gallon than gasoline. Sorry Stephen- I had to jump on one of my soapboxes! Cheers!

Oh- and try putting squeezing some lemon juice in your water....smiles!

They've apparently stopped making people who think I'm interesting; I've looked for them everywhere!!

Call the company!! They MIGHT still have some in the warehouse! Give them a good job story!!!

We have a friend who refers to this syndrome as being "Costco-ed." He points out that just when you become attached to a particular speciality item like a dried fruit, or gluten free chip, or kind of salmon, it suddenly disappears. Yes, it happens here too. As for your water, perhaps make your own with a slight splash of your favorite berry juice. Now, as for Roman Raspberry wine-Really?!!!

Well, now I don't know about those retail gods!! Maybe you just don't get out shopping enough!

While i'm mostly laid back and just buy what's available that i like, Sweetie has had trouble with things he likes, especially specific styles of socks (of which he is very picky) no longer being sold.
By: messymimi on January 3, 2018
I feel for you Stephen and can relate, it seems that I spend more time in the store looking for things that are no longer stocked than buying the things that are stocked...

I am also brand loyal and fall victim to losing some of my favorite products (although I can't think of specifics right's been a long day). I especially hate when a company changes the logo, or the packaging and sells you the same product but with slightly less of it for the same price. One of my biggest peeves for sure because I know they take advantage of consumers that way. Sorry you can't find your favorite water anymore.
By: STL Fan on January 3, 2018
I hate that as well and it has happened to me but I canât remember now on what:) is Splash carbonated? If it is, maybe you can buy soda water and a berry juice and mix the 2 together. I love my orange juice and soda water and mix 1 part OJ to 3 parts soda water and this is my drink and it is about the only drink I have as I donât like sugar drinks any more. My hubby mixes soda water with cranberry juice.
By: Birgit on January 3, 2018
If it was carbonated, you could try the Clear American brand of sparkling water sold by Walmart. Hick loves their strawberry water. There are many different flavors, but I don't know if they have berry. Here's a 3-minute review by some guy who bought the bigger bottles. We get them in a four-pack of about 16 or 20 ounces.

We can purchase it by the case here in Canada. In the U.S. you can order it online.
By: Daniel LaFrance on January 3, 2018
Oh no, I feel your pain. I too seem to have fringe taste for things I like disappear from the shelves. Evidently, my loyalty isn't enough to warrant continued manufacture. Sigh. Do try the Internet though. It has allowed me to at least wean off a favorite product.

I know what you mean. I like Nescafe freeze dried coffee (much to the amusement and ridicule of everyone I know); but it's getting harder and harder t o find as the world moves to Starbucks and Keurig.

For some odd reason, our local Fry's store has stopped carrying Kroger Lite yogurt, which my wife enjoyed. They have a zillion others but most of them are either too caloric or too expensive for her. We used to buy lots of it so I can't imagine why they discontinued it.
By: Catalyst on January 4, 2018
I feel your pain. In no particular order, I've had all of these discontinued: special shampoo for dandruff, cough syrup my dad liked, other shampoos too numerous to mention, yogurt, and cat food for a very ill cat. I once drove forty minutes (each way) to the next town to buy a case of the cat food! It sounds like you have some good suggestions in the comments to try to approximate the flavour of your Splash, but it's just not the same, dammit, is it?
By: jenny_o on January 4, 2018
Yes - and I am very mad about it. Chocolate Cool Whip!!!
By: Pixel Peeper on January 7, 2018
Yes I drink decafe coffee, and Nescafe discontinued Alta Rica Decaff, and it was about the only brand that actually tasted of coffee.
